Classic 500 shifting

Hey, I got my classic 500 today and was thrilled to drive right away. I only have one concern though, which occurs after accelerating at a green light. Shifting into 2nd gear from 1st proves to be very difficult since I always end up in neutral. Sometimes even after pushing the lever up several times it still leaves me in neutral. I do not have any problem shifting into the other gears once I am in second gear, but its still very annoying.
